UN Habitat Visits Abia First Lady

The United Nations Habitat Programme for women and youths has paid a courtesy visit to wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu to seek her partnership towards specific programmes that would solve the need for shelter for indigent people.

Speaking at her office during the visit, Mrs Ikpeazu expressed hope that the partnership would bring about intervention in housing, infrastructure and major developmental need of the state.

She noted that Abia is an industrial and transportation hub in Nigeria, bordered by nine states, and as such, developments in Abia cascades into such other states.

The Governor’s wife enlightened them on the existence of her non-profit NGO (Vicar Hope Foundation), which has been touching the lives of Abians positively, including several indigent persons, who had three-bedroom modern bungalows built for them under the shelter scheme of the Foundation.

In her comments, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Chinedu Brown disclosed that the coming of the UN Habitat delegation was timely and a welcome development, which would afford them the opportunity to benefit from their programmes, thus satisfying the yearnings of the youth and women in the area of empowerment, and assured them that an enabling environment would be created by her ministry.

In his speech, the Nigeria Focal Person of UN Habitat Women and Youth programme, Mr Uzoh Ifeanyi, who led team, described their group as an arm of the United Nations that focuses on housing, environment, and good governance in urban areas, with a mandate to promote the Habitat Agenda.

He commended Mrs Ikpeazu and the Vicar Hope Foundation for the laudable achievements in the area of providing shelter for the indigent in the society, which is in tandem with their programme, and assured of collaboration to positively affect the lives of Abians.

The delegation also presented a certificate of merit from the United Nations to Mrs Ikpeazu.
