Morocco Officially Requests To Join AU

The Kingdom of Morocco has officially submitted a request to be allowed as a member of the African Union (AU).

The North Africa’s request was submitted to the AU by an Adviser to King Mohammed VI on Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, Taieb Fassi Fihri.

Morocco informed AU’s Chairperson, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, of the country’s intention to join the Union.

This happened at a bilateral meeting in the margin of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the New York on Thursday, September 22, 2016.

The Adviser informed Dr Zuma that Morocco had submitted the letter of intent on Thursday, September 22, 2016, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He also handed a copy to the Chairperson.

Acknowledging receipt, the Chairperson advised the Envoy that due process will be followed, including officially informing Member States, as per the provisions of the AU Constitutive Act. The Kingdom of Morocco will be officially notified of the outcome.

The King’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs also informed the Chairperson of plans underway to host COP22, which is scheduled to take place in Marrakech in 2017.

The AU presently boasts of 54 member states.

Morocco had earlier opted to leave the Organization of African Unity (OAU), when it changed to the AU in on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa.
