Residents of Kano have received free pre-paid metres installed into their homes by the Kano Electricity Distribution Plc (KEDCO).

This, KEDCO explained, is in line with its determination to deliver free meters to all customers in its franchise area of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States.

In a statement issued by the company’s spokesperson, Mr Mohammed Kandi, KEDCO said it plans to move to Nassarawa district soon, having metered about 6, 947 in the ongoing meter deployment exercise.

It also recalled that the exercise precedes the launch of pole/wall mounted meter deployment plan in Kabuga by the minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, in June 2016.

KEDCO, however, notify the residents of Nasarawa district of its plan to replicate the pole/wall mounted meter deployment in the area, and solicit the customer’s cooperation in ensuring a hitch-free exercise.

During the exercise, it said, the old and non-functional PPMs would be replaced with new pre-paid meters, assuring that all token units in the old PPMs will be transferred to the new ones.

Meanwhile, the management of KEDCO has promised to give customers who settle a part or whole of their unpaid bills a pre-paid meter immediately without necessarily following the existing arrangement of batch-by-batch meter roll out.

It said the initiative, which was premeditated for all classes of customers, had been designed to free them of their accumulated debts, considering the current economic realities in the country.
