Northern Governors Seal Deal For 5 Solar Plants

In a bid to tackle the perennial power problem in Nigeria and also look into other environmental friendly source of power supply, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the General Electric ‎International for the construction of five solar plants in parts of the region.

The deal was sealed on Monday between both parties at a brief ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

The solar plants, to be situated in Borno, Kebbi, Nassarawa, Niger and Taraba States, when completed, would generate 500 megawatts of electricity to northern Nigeria.

Chairman of the Forum, Mr Kashim Shettima, who doubles as the Borno State Governor, who signed the agreement on behalf of others, explained that the project is aimed at improving economic activities and social services in the region.

According to him, “The 19 Governors of the north jointly created this approach. We want to go beyond lamentation to provide solutions and we all know that power is key to industrial development.

“With power, we can create jobs, stimulate our economies and make life better for our people. The General Electric has over 120 years’ experience in energy solutions and they have been operating in Nigeria for over 50 years, we cannot have a better partner than GE.

“We shall do our part as Governors, this I will assure you. We are deeply committed to this agreement.”

Responding, General Electric’s Senior Executive, Western Europe and Africa, Mr Armand Pineda, and the President/Chief Executive Officer, ‎General Electric, Nigeria, Mr Lazarus Angbazo, who signed on behalf of their company, promised to work effortlessly to make the project a reality.
