Poultry farmers in the country have been advised to be very careful of the recent re-emergence of bird flu in Nigeria.

This call was made by President of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) at a programme held on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to NVMA leader, Dr Godwin Abonyi, stakeholders must tackle the issue of the Avian Influenza virus commonly called bird flu with caution.

He said government must treat the menace like a national emergency devoid of bottlenecks or bureaucracies.

Dr Abonyi said the havoc the virus can wreck is better imagined than experienced.

The veterinary association boss, who was speaking at the opening of the annual national summit of NVMA, also urged pet owners to always vaccinate their pets in order to curtail the scourge of rabies.

He pointed out that the programme was coming at a most critical moment when government was battling to defeat the scourge of bird flu again.

He also appealed to the government to make agriculture very attractive to the youths because the sector is capable to lift Nigeria from doldrums.

Dr Abonyo also solicited for a deal on behalf of young veterinary graduates in funding their take-off in livestock production and clinic/ambulatory services.
