A giant a giant size statue of a fisherman has been commissioned by the Lagos State government at the Soglo way roundabout in Badagry to reflect one of the indigenous occupations of the early settlers in the area as part activities marking the Lagos@50 celebration.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said the erection of various statues and monuments across the state was not only to serve as tourists attraction centre but also to tell the history and contribution of the indigenous fishermen in providing food for the teeming population in Lagos.

The Governor, who was represented at the event by the Special Adviser on Food Security, Mr Ganiu Okanlawon Sanni, also said the monument depicts dignity of labour, strength and glamour of indigenous industry, which is bound to inspire the younger generation to work hard in order to enhance food security in the state.

He noted that the present administration was determined to demonstrate its commitment to reviving and sustaining the traditional indigenous cottage industries for which Lagos is known, especially now that the federal government is diversifying the economy by developing the agriculture sector.

Dignitaries at the event include the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr Hunpe Babatunde; Permanent Secretary, Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Adewale Ashimi; Sole Administrator, Badagry Local Government, Mr Jacob Kentomahun; High Chief Patric Mobee, the Mobee of Badagry, Directors and other staff of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
