Delta State Governor, Mr Ifeanyi Okowa, has stressed the need for training and retraining of staff so as to achieve effective governance.

Mr Okowa made this known on Tuesday while swearing-in Mrs Philomena Oyearone as a member of the Delta State Civil Service Commission (CSC).

According to the Governor, his administration would not compromise on actions that will ensure effective and well-disciplined civil service.

“It is my hope that we take cognizance of the importance of staff development; if the staff are not properly developed, they will not carry out their duties efficiently, which will lead to indiscipline,” Governor Okowa said, emphasising, “the Civil Service Commission is involved in the employment, promotion and discipline of staff.”

The Governor, who expressed happiness with the way the commission under the leadership of Chief Nkem Okwuofu is handling its affairs, stated that it was good that promotion exams were being conducted for civil servants, which was a paradigm shift from situation where they were promoted based on years of service.

“I am happy that staff now write exams for promotion, rather than the situation where they progress automatically after staying in a position for three years; promotion is now given to those that deserves it.” The Governor stressed.

While congratulating Dr Oyearone on the appointment, Governor Okowa urged her to put her experience to bear in ensuring that the Commission remain on its steady part of progress, especially in the area of discipline, reiterating that a disciplined staff would lead to improved productivity.

Dr Oyearone thanked Governor Okowa for the appointment, assuring that she will be a team player as a commissioner in the State Civil Service commission.
