Bill to Establish National Tea and Coffee Development Council Scales Second Reading

A bill for an act to establish the National Tea and Coffee Development Council and for other connected Matters, has passed second reading on the floor of the Senate.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf.

At the plenary at the Senate on Thursday, November 2, 2017, the lawmaker explained that the bill will help boost the production of coffee in the country, saying it would also help Nigeria earn foreign exchange.

Mr Yusuf argued that the country, at this time of economic diversification, can tap from the huge revenues that can be generated from the production of tea and coffee.

He said the nation was blessed with land, soil type, and good climate condition that can help with the production of the commodities.

Corroborating his point, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha noted that, “This will go a long way to increase Nigeria’s Tea production to a global scale.”

Nigeria, which is Africa’s largest economy, is not among the top 10 coffee producing countries in the world.

Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world, while Ethiopia claims the number one spot in Africa with Uganda following.

The top 10 largest producers of coffee in the world in 2017 are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, India, Honduras, Uganda, Mexico and Guatemala.

After the bill was debated by the Senator yesterday, the Senate President, Mr Bukola Saraki, referred the bill to the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and gave the panel four weeks to report back to the Senate.
