Justice Walter Onnoghen has been ordered to vacate his seat as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), multiple reports on Saturday said.

Business Post reports that after several appeals from different quarters, President Muhammadu Buhari, in early 2017, forwarded the name of Justice Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation.

Since assuming office, the legal luminary has brought life into the judiciary with some reforms he initiated.

According reports on Saturday, Justice Onnoghen was asked to resign from office because he allegedly failed declared his assets to the relevant authorities.

He was also accused of operating domiciliary accounts in the three main foreign currencies; Dollar, Pound Sterling and Euro.

This, government said, is against what is expected of public office holders in the country.

As a result, he will be arraigned on Monday by the federal government before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) headed by Justice Danladi Yakubu and charged for criminal charges. Justice Onnoghen was the first southerner to become a CJN in 30 years after Justice Ayo Gabriel Irikefe held the office from 1985 to 1987.
