Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has reportedly directed Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) to immediately leave Lagos roads.
According to reports, this move became necessary after the state government received several complaints about the agency from members of the public.
It was reliably learnt that the VIO was almost becoming a clog in the wheel of progress of the Mr Ambode’s administration.
Reports quoted sources as saying Governor Ambode was not happy with negative reports he got from the vehicle inspection agency ranging from overzealousness, highhandedness, disregard for the rule of law and others.
In view of these, Mr Ambode was forced to eject them from Lagos roads pending when a proper restructuring of the agency would be done.
It was learnt that what brought about the latest development was the story of a painter’s car in the custody of the VIO that was allegedly burnt by its officials. The issue caused public outcry and forced a launch of an investigation into activities of the agency.
Though Commissioner for Information in the state, Mr Steve Ayorinde, did not confirm the removal of the agency, he said the VIO was undergoing restructuring to make it meet up with the present-day standard.
He assured that the rebranded VIO would be a pride of Lagos when it is finally unveiled.
