Volume of Shares Traded on Nigerian Stock Exchange Drops by 623m in 5 Days

The volume of equities transacted on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) during the five trading days of last week depreciated by 623 million, Business Post reports.

During the week, a total turnover  of 1.219  billion shares worth N17.3 billion in 17,362 deals were traded compared with a total of 1.842 billion shares valued at N16.6 billion that exchanged hands the previous week in 18,941 deals.

The Financial Services industry, measured by volume, led the activity chart with 842.8 million shares valued at N9.6 billion traded in 9,231 deals, contributing 69.15 percent and 55.31 percent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Consumer Goods industry followed with 113.7 million shares worth N4.7 billion in 3,120 deals, while the third place was occupied by Services industry with a turnover of 105.6 million shares worth N519.8 million in 593 deals.

Trading in the top three equities; Access Bank, Zenith Bank and Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NHACO), measured by volume, accounted for 497.5 million shares worth N6.6 billion in 2,251 deals, contributing 40.82 percent and 38.19 percent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

During the week, 21 equities appreciated in price, lower than 27 in the previous week, while 55 equities depreciated in price, higher than 45 equities of the previous week, and 93 equities remained unchanged, lower than 97 equities recorded in the preceding week.

The NSE All-Share Index and market capitalization depreciated by 0.62 percent to close the week at 37,392.77 points and N13.546 trillion respectively.

Similarly, all other indices finished lower with the exception of the NSE Oil/Gas and the NSE Lotus II Indices that appreciated by 0.71 percent and 0.37 percent respectively.

Also traded during the week were a total of 13,517 units of Federal Government valued at N 14.899 million executed in 30 deals compared with a total of 2,359 units valued at N2.188 million transacted the previous week in 24 deals.

Furthermore, a total of 79,304 units of Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) valued at N1.491 million executed in 18 deals were transacted compared with a total of 25,220 units valued at N454,438.90 that was traded in the previous week in 4 deals.
