A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Lamido Sanusi, has been appointed to the board of MTN Group Limited.

The former bank executive with First Bank of Nigeria became the Emir of Kano after he was suspended as CBN chief in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

MTN Group is planning to list shares of its Nigerian arm on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) before the end of this year.

It was learned that the paramount northern traditional ruler will serve on the MTN board as a non-executive director.

He is expected to take the company higher and provide valuable advice with his huge knowledge of the Nigerian economy

Also, as part of the boardroom shake up at MTN Group, former South Africa Deputy Finance Minister, Mr Mcebisi Jonas, has been appointed as chairman of the Africa’s biggest GSM network service provider.

Mr Jonas will replace Mr Phuthuma Nhleko, who plans to step down in December after almost two decades as chairman or chief executive officer of the Johannesburg-based company.

The new Chairman is seen as the right candidate to sustain the growth at MTN and he is will assume office on December 15, 2019.

He, Mr Sanusi and other member of the board, according to MTN Group on Friday, will “counsel, guide and support the MTN Group” in its vision of growing its African and global footprint in telecommunications and increasing digital inclusion, MTN said in an update to shareholders.
