Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 in a thrilling Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday that saw the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) again take centre stage, this time stealing City’s thunder.

Gabriel Jesus thought he’d scored the winner from a corner in stoppage time. However, a video review judged that the ball grazed the arm of a Man City player before reaching the Brazil international.

Coming off a hat trick last week, Raheem Sterling had put the hosts ahead after 20 minutes when he headed home a cross from Kevin De Bruyne to give the host a lead.

Tottenham answered just three minutes later through midfielder Erik Lamela who fired low and hard past Ederson from the edge of the 18-yard box after the city goalstopper was off his position.

Sergio Aguero restored City’s advantage on 35 minutes thanks to another inch-perfect De Bruyne cross, calmly slotting the ball pass Hugo Lloris with a cushioned redirect from close range.

Second-half substitute Lucas Moura again put Spurs level in the 56th minute, out-leaping Kyle Walker before connecting with a Lamela corner kick at the near post.

It was the second straight match that the blue side of Manchester have had their goal ruled out by VAR. The first was the first game of the season with West Ham, where Raheem Sterling’s goal was cancelled for offside.

Man City XI: Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Laporte, Zinchenko; Rodrigo, Gundogan, De Bruyne; Sterling, Bernardo, Aguero.

Tottenham XI: Lloris; Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Sanchez, RoseWinks, Sissoko, Ndombele, Eriksen, Lamela; Kane.
