WhatsApp Adds Feature to Create Unnamed Groups

Social messaging platform, WhatsApp, has introduced a feature that lets users create groups on the instant messaging app without needing to name them.

This is a new option open to users, a change from the norm as users are required to name the groups they create on the messaging app.

The announcement was made by Meta’s chief executive officer (CEO), Mr Mark Zuckerberg, on his Facebook page and Meta’s Instagram channel on Wednesday.

According to him, the feature will help users now be able to create a group, even if they have not decided on a topic yet or need to create one quickly.

However, there will be a limit to participants as only six people can be allowed in such a group, lower than the usual 1,024 members allowed in a named WhatsApp group.

These groups will be dynamically named based on the users added to a group. That is, the group name will appear differently for each participant, depending on how they have saved contacts on their phone. In the instance that a user joins an unnamed group with people who haven’t saved their contacts, only the phone number will be visible in the group name.

The company plans to roll out the new group-centric feature globally over the next few weeks.

This is the latest WhatsApp update after the messaging app added support for HD photos on the app last week.

Business Post has also reported that WhatsApp updated its app with features including screen sharing during video calls and the ability to record and share short video messages.
