Customs Deputy Comptroller Slumps, Dies at National Assembly

A deputy comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Essien Andrew, has reportedly slumped and died on the premises of the National Assembly.

The senior customs official died on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, while he was being grilled by members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Account in Abuja.

The unfortunate incident, which happened this afternoon, confused participants of the investing panel. He was promptly attended to by officials of the National Assembly clinic but he passed on.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Abbas Tajudeen, in a statement issued by the spokesman of the lower chamber of the parliament, Mr Akin Rotimi, said he was “saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.”

The green chamber of the legislative arm of government also expressed its deep sadness over “the passing of an esteemed official of the Nigeria Customs Service who was at the National Assembly for an engagement with a House Committee.”

“The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time. We recognize the significant contributions he made to the Nigeria Customs Service and our nation.

‘The House of Representatives stands ready to support efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to ensure all necessary protocols are followed.

“Further information will be provided as it becomes available. We ask for patience and respect for the privacy of the family during this period of mourning,” it stated.
