The United States has reaffirmed its support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his effort to bring corruption to its knees in the country.
This assurance was given yesterday by the US Secretary of State, Mr Mike Pompeo, when he called Mr Buhari on phone to further strengthen the cordial relationship between the two countries.
On April 30, 2018, President Buhari was on a state visit to the United States, where he held talks with President Donald Trump.
During the visit, both leaders said they were ready to work cordially with each other by boosting economic and other relations.
At Thursday’s call to Mr Buhari, Mr Pompeo according to a statement from the US Department of State, recognised the longstanding relationship between the Nigerian and American people and underscored the themes of the April 30 official working visit of President Buhari to the White House.
He recognized Nigerian leadership across the African continent on priorities shared by both nations colonised by Britain.
These priorities, according to the US scribe, include countering terrorism and other threats to peace and security, creating economic opportunity, fighting corruption, and advancing democracy and stability.
Mr Pompeo told the President that he welcomes continued cooperation in advancing the two nations’ mutual prosperity.
