One of the big shots in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Aminu Tambuwal, has defected from the party.
Mr Tambuwal is currently the Governor of Sokoto State.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives announced his departure from the APC on Wednesday afternoon after weeks of speculations that he was on his way out.
His defection comes about four years after he decamped from the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, which was then the opposition party.
Addressing a news conference today at the Government House in Sokoto, the Governor said he was leaving the APC after getting the approval of his people to do so.
Mr Tambuwal informed newsmen at the press briefing that he was leaving the APC to re-join the PDP.
He later posted on the state government’s official Twitter page that, “I have consulted widely especially with the Sokoto people and they have confidently assured me of my next political move. I hereby defect officially to the PDP.”
The defection of Tambuwal from the APC makes it the third Governor leaving the ruling party for the opposition party.
It is believed that at least two more Governors of the APC would join the trio in the coming days as the 2019 general elections draws closer.
