The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Godswill Akpabio, has been elected the President of the Senate.
He was chosen by colleagues on Tuesday morning at the inauguration of the 10th Senate.
He defeated his contender, Mr Abdul’aziz Yari, a former Governor of Zamfara State.
Mr Akpabio was elected into the Senate after he left office as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. However, he did not return to the upper chamber of the National Assembly in 2019. He was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari as a Minister.
In 2022, he announced his intention to contest the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but he later stepped down for the eventual winner of the exercise, President Bola Tinubu.
At the time of filing this report, he was being sworn-in by the Clerk.
