Tinubu Confers National Honours on Super Eagles

Members of the silver-winning Super Eagles team in the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire have been conferred with national honours by President Bola Tinubu.
At a reception held to welcome them to the country on Tuesday, the President awarded each member of the team with the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) for their display at the tournament, won by the host nation after defeating Nigeria in the final on Sunday by 2-1.
Mr Tinubu, while addressing the country’s national football team at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja, said the players will also receive a flat and a plot of land each at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which is to be facilitated immediately by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
All the team members and officials were in attendance, including Alex Iwobi, who had faced cyber-attacks from Nigerian netizens who felt he did not give his best in the final match.
The team captain, Ahmed Musa, who did not get playing time at the competition, appealed to Nigerians on Monday to take it easy on his teammate, urging them to stop cyberbullying Alex Iwobi.
Musa had written, “Dear fans, I want to please urge you to halt the cyber-bullying directed towards Alex Iwobi. Cyberbullying is not just a violation of decency but also a serious crime. It’s hypocritical to claim that football unites us while engaging in such behaviour.
“Losing a game is undoubtedly tough, but targeting a single player for the team’s shortcomings is unfair and unjust.
“We win as a team, and we lose as a team. Alex gave his all on the field, just like every member of our squad.
“Instead of spreading negativity, let’s show genuine love and support to our players. They need our encouragement now more than ever. Let’s uplift each other and stand united, both in victory and defeat.”
The Minister of Sports Development, Mr John Enoh, also rallied behind the Fulham star.
“I condemn strongly the cyberbullying of Alex Iwobi or any other sportsman or woman,” he wrote in a Tuesday video post on his X handle that captured him in a meeting with Iwobi.
“They give a lot if not all of themselves when representing our Nation, the least we can do is rally support for them, be kind and gracious with words and actions towards them.
“Dear Alex Iwobi be strong. You were part of a team that brought home a silver medal from AFCON 2023. The last time we won a silver was 23 years ago at AFCON 2000.
“Cyber bullies do not determine what the leadership of the country, the rest of Nigerians including myself, think of you. You did your best and gave over four days for the love of the nation. We applaud you. We are proud of you, keep soaring.”
The start of a football season always tricks people a little. Everything looks fresh. New shirts, new signings, clean tables, confident managers, fans talking themselves into hope again. The Federation of the International Football Association (FIFA) will not proceed with its proposal to sell a piece of its business operations to outside investors after the project was met with fierce resistance from some of its member associations.
FIFA’s plan was to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling about a 20 per cent stake in a new unit that would run FIFA events, including the World Cup, valuing it at $20 billion.
The proposal was strongly opposed by the Union of the European Football Associations (UEFA), European football’s governing body, which voted on Thursday to boycott FIFA competitions. There was also opposition from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the English FA.
In a statement, UEFA said that it was “irresponsible and indefensible that a proposal of such significance for football was conceived in secret”.
The Switzerland-based organisation’s statement also accused FIFA of putting the sport’s “soul” up for sale.
“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement announcing the cancellation.
“Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”
UEFA welcomed the decision to scrap it but said it had lost confidence in FIFA’s current leadership, while AFC, while welcoming the decision, said that it expected any initiative of such magnitude to be discussed with its members in a “timely, transparent and meaningful manner”.
Mr Infantino’s senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro had resigned with immediate effect, calling the plan “a bad deal for football”.
FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour said staff were “deceived” by Mr Infantino, describing the proposal as a “project of one person”.
The development has now raised eyebrows against the FIFA President, especially his relationship with US President Donald Trump.
The planned FIFA private investment scheme involved Mr Joshua Kushner, the founder of Thrive Capital, who would lead the proposed venture capital group via a fund called Thrive Eternal. He is the brother of Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Trump.
Mr Infantino said in April he would seek a fourth term as FIFA president, with the election scheduled to take place in Morocco on March 18 next year.
The deadline for potential candidates to declare in a presidential vote of the 211 members is November 18.

Saturday brings the next round of Group C fixtures, with Egypt taking on Malawi before Nigeria face Zambia. Malawi will enter their encounter with Egypt full of confidence after their historic 3-2 victory over the Super Falcons, while Egypt will be looking to recover from their opening defeat to Zambia.
The Super Falcons, meanwhile, will be aiming to bounce back when they face Zambia at 9:00 pm. Nigeria suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening game, while Zambia began their campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt. The encounter presents an important opportunity for Nigeria to get their campaign back on track, while Zambia will be looking to maintain their winning momentum.
Sunday’s action will bring Group D into focus, with Ghana facing Cameroon before Mali take on tournament debutants Cape Verde. Ghana started their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde, while Cameroon secured a 2-1 win against Mali. Both sides will be looking to build on those results as the group stage continues.
