President Bola Tinubu has been congratulated on his re-election as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Government.
Mr Tinubu, who is the President of Nigeria, was re-elected for another year in office last Sunday at the 65th Ordinary Session of the bloc held in Abuja. He was first elected to the position in July 2023.
In a statement on Monday, the National Commission Against the Proliferation of Arms, Light Weapons, and Ammunitions (NATCOM) commended the President for his re-election, describing it as a right move.
In the letter signed by its acting Director-General, Mr Agaba Iduh Fidel, the group emphasised that Mr Tinubu deserved to be given another chance to lead the group, which witnessed the exit of Niger Republic, Nigeria’s neighbour, after a coup in the country last year.
NATCOM lauded the President’s leadership and dedication to promoting democracy, peace, security, and development in the West African sub-region. It highlighted his inspiring vision for a more democratic and prosperous ECOWAS, expressing confidence that the organization will achieve even greater heights under his continued guidance.
It emphasized that the re-election was a testament to the trust and confidence that the member states of ECOWAS have in his ability to lead and steer the organization towards a brighter future, expressing a strong belief that his leadership will bring about positive change and progress in the entire West Africa.
The organisation said it was eager to work closely with President Tinubu and ECOWAS in their shared mission to combat the proliferation of small arms, light weapons, and ammunition in West Africa through collaboration with relevant security agencies.
It highlighted the importance of creating a safer and more secure environment for all citizens through such collaborative efforts with security forces in the country.
NATCOM wished Mr Tinubu success in his endeavours as the chairman of ECOWAS, expressing its readiness to support and collaborate with him in achieving their shared goals for the region.
