Nationwide Protest: House of Representatives Reconvenes Wednesday

The House of Representatives will reconvene plenary on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, to hold talks with young Nigerians, who are planning a nationwide protest the next day.

A statement from the lower chamber of the National Assembly on Monday disclosed that the Speaker, Mr Tajudeen Abbas, will engage the youths on why they should shelve the demonstration, aimed to call the attention of the federal government to hunger in the country.

Recall that on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the green chamber of the legislative arm of government embarked on its annual recess and was to resume legislative functions in September.

But the statement issued today said members of the House have been summoned from their respective constituencies to be in Abuja on Wednesday for “this crucial session,” according to an internal memorandum issued by the Clerk of the House, Mr Yahaya Danzaria, on Sunday.

In the statement signed by the spokesman of the House of Reps, Mr Akin Rotimi, it was stated that, “This town hall is a key component of the legislative agenda of the 10th House, which emphasises sustained youth engagement and the promotion of youth political participation.”

“It is designed to provide a platform for young Nigerians to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and engage directly with legislative leaders on issues impacting their lives and futures.

“This initiative aims to bridge the gap between policymakers and the younger generation, ensuring that policies and laws are inclusive and address the specific needs of the youth.

“The 10th House of Representatives remains steadfast in its commitment to representing the interests of the Nigerian people and advancing the nation’s development,” the statement further said.

It noted that the engagement would provide an avenue for the Speaker to listen to the yearnings of the aggrieved youths, comprising leaders, students from tertiary institutions, young professionals, and representatives from various youth organisations and civil society groups.
