Results of candidates of sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja have been released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Mr Amos Dangut, at a press briefing on Monday disclosed that results of 215,267 of the 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination, representing 11.92 per cent of all candidates who sat for the exam, have been withheld, explaining that the reason for the withheld results was due to malpractices.
“A total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 recognized secondary schools in the country.
“1,685,889 candidates, representing 93.39 per cent, have their results fully processed and released. 119,327 candidates, representing 6.61 per cent have one or more of their subjects still being processed due to some issues being resolved,” Mr Dangut, adding that efforts are being made to complete the process and release the affected candidates’ results within days.
He stated that of the total number of 1,805,216 candidates that sat the examination, 896,894 were males, while 908,322 were females, representing 49.68 per cent and 50.32 per cent, respectively, with 1,301,941 securing at least credit in English and Mathematics.
“The analysis of statistics of candidates’ performance in the examination shows that out of the 1,805,216 candidates that sat the examination, 1,332,089 candidates, representing 73.79 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e. with or without English Language and/ or Mathematics;
“1,301,941 candidates, representing 72.12 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
“Of this number, 628,820, i.e., 48.30 per cent were male candidates, while 673,121, i.e., 51.70 per cent were female candidates.
“A comparison of the percentage of candidates in this category in WASSCE for School 2023 and 2024, reveals that in this year’s (2024) WASSCE, there is a 7.69 per cent decrease in performance. That is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 79.81 per cent,” Mr Dangut disclosed.
He also informed newsmen that, “Results of candidates who are sponsored by states indebted to the Council will not be released now until payment is made,” appealing to the “concerned to do so to enable the affected schools/candidates to access their results.”
“Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the council can access their results on the council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org, within the next 12 hours,” he stated, noting that “copies of the result listing will be sent to schools shortly.”
He advised candidates to “apply for their digital certificate” after checking the result online and should expect it “48 hours thereafter.”
