A Lagos-based maid has been apprehended by security operatives after she allegedly stole her boss’ $10,000, which she later exchanged at a Bureaux de Change (BDC) office at N86 per Dollar, instead of the prevailing rate of N410/$.
The house help, identified as Blessing Paul from Benue State, was said to have committed the act in the highbrow Gbagada area of Lagos State.
She was paraded before newsmen alongside her accomplices.
Blessing Paul, the main suspect, was said to have used a knife to forcibly open her boss’ room while she was at work.
Her boss, identified simply as Mrs Totunbo, raised an alarm when she could not find the hard currencies she kept in the house, which had already been handed over to the house guard identified as Daniel by Blessing Paul.
It was gathered that Daniel later gave the money to another security man in the area identified as Amos, who in turn took it to a BDC operator for the Naira equivalent.
However, the forex dealer, who claimed he only received $5,000 from Amos, admitted he exchanged the Dollar at the rate of N86.
Reacting, spokesman of the police in Lagos, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, the BDC operator gave the suspects N870,000 as equivalent for $5,000, adding that the police have recovered N400,000 from there.
He said the command was in the process of confiscating the money through a court order.
