TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner, AMNI, have taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the development of the offshore Ima gas field in Nigeria, with production expected to supply the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) plant on Bonny Island.

TotalEnergies, the French energy company, announced the decision on Wednesday, saying production from the field is expected to begin in 2028 and reach a peak of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day.

The output is equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and will be transported through a pipeline to the NLNG facility.

The Ima field is located on Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117, offshore Nigeria, near Bonny Island in Rivers State. It is a low-cost and low-emissions development, with a simplified platform design, electric power supply from shore, no flaring, and permanent methane detection and monitoring.

TotalEnergies said gas from the field would provide about one-third of the feedgas required for Train 7, the planned expansion of the NLNG facility.

The Train 7 project is designed to increase NLNG’s liquefaction capacity to 30 million metric tonnes per year from the current 22 million tonnes.

The development of Ima is part of TotalEnergies’ efforts to expand its gas production in Nigeria and support the country’s liquefied natural gas industry.

The project is also expected to strengthen domestic gas supply to NLNG, which operates one of the world’s major liquefied natural gas plants and exports LNG to international markets.

“We are very pleased to announce the FID for the Ima gas project, marking a new milestone in the deployment of our integrated gas strategy in Nigeria. After the Ubeta project sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start up next year, Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian Government for non-associated gas developments,” said Mr Nicolas Terraz, President, Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies.

“This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria,” he added.

Nigeria has sought to increase gas production and investment in the sector as it looks to expand LNG exports and reduce gas flaring. The country holds some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, but production has been constrained by infrastructure, investment and security challenges.

The Ima development adds to recent investments in Nigeria’s offshore gas sector as energy companies seek to bring new fields into production and support long-term LNG supply.
