Gen Z and late millennials could help sway the direction of Nigeria’s next general elections based on the latest figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The commission noted that Nigerians aged between 18 and 34 years account for 28.79 per cent of registered voters ahead of the 2027 general election, noting that 29,777,576 voters in the age bracket are currently on the national voters’ register.
INEC Chairman, Mr Joash Amupitan (SAN), reeled out these figures on Tuesday at a national stakeholders’ meeting held to mark 100 days to the 2027 general election.
However, the largest age group on the register is voters aged between 35 and 49 years, numbering 43,265,946, or 41.83 per cent of the electorate.
Presenting the age profile of the register, Mr Amupitan said voters aged 18 to 34 years were the second-largest group.
“Those aged 18 to 34 years, numbering 29,777,576, represent 28.79 per cent,” he said.
Voters aged between 50 and 69 years number 22,983,922, while those aged 70 and above account for 7,402,291 voters, representing 7.16 per cent.
The figures mean voters below 50 years make up the clear majority of the electorate that will participate in the 2027 elections.
Mr Amupitan said the latest register followed three phases of Continuous Voter Registration conducted between August 2025 and July 2026.
The three phases produced a combined 10,772,421 newly registered voters.
The first phase recorded 2,611,266 registrations, while the second and third phases produced 4,121,835 and 3,867,997 registrations, respectively.
Amupitan said the commission’s preparations were designed to ensure that the 2027 election meets the required standards of credibility.
“The 100-day milestone is not just a countdown. It is a call to action,” he said.
He added that the commission was working to ensure that the election “is not only successful, but serves as a global benchmark for transparency, integrity and peace.”
