Fidson Gets Nod to Manufacture, Distribute Antiviral Pill for Influenza
By Aduragbemi Omiyale
The Medicines Patent Pool has selected Fidson Healthcare Plc to manufacture and distribute Baloxavir Marboxil under a landmark voluntary licensing agreement with Roche.
The Nigerian company is among the 11 pharmaceutical firms authorised to develop and sell the single-dose antiviral for influenza A and B.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Baloxavir marboxil, commonly known by the brand name Xofluza, is a single-dose prescription antiviral pill used to treat and prevent acute uncomplicated influenza (the flu) in patients aged 5 years and older.
Fidson is among other organisations from Brazil, China, India, and others under sublicence agreements to manufacture generic versions of Roche’s baloxavir marboxil through MPP’s voluntary licence.
Announcing the development, Fidson said, “We are proud to share that Fidson Healthcare has been selected by the Medicines Patent Pool as a sublicensee for Baloxavir Marboxil, a single-dose antiviral for influenza A and B, under a landmark voluntary licensing agreement with Roche.
“This means Fidson is now authorised to produce and distribute affordable versions of this medicine across 129 countries, bringing a first-class treatment closer to the people who need it most.
“It is the kind of moment that reminds us why we do what we do. We value life. And today, that commitment just got bigger.”
Also commenting on the development, the Executive Director of the Medicines Patent Pool, Mr Charles Gore, said, “We are now moving into implementation with manufacturers across multiple regions. This is exactly the kind of work that needs to happen before, rather than during, a health emergency.
“We will now work closely with these manufacturers to support product development and regulatory approval, with the aim of making quality-assured generic baloxavir available as quickly as possible. By combining global manufacturing capacity with regionally focused production, we are helping build a more geographically diverse and resilient supply base for the future.”
