Canadian Writer Anne Carson Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
By Adedapo Adesanya
Canadian poet, essayist and classicist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Swedish Academy described as her “bold and inventive oeuvre,” which has created new forms for contemporary literature through a playful dialogue with classical tradition.
Carson, 76, becomes the third Canadian-born writer to receive the prestigious award, after Saul Bellow, who won in 1976, and Alice Munro, who was honoured in 2013.
The Swedish Academy praised Carson’s ability to move seamlessly between poetry, prose, drama, translation and classical scholarship, often drawing on ancient Greek and Roman literature and reworking its themes and characters for modern audiences.
Born in Canada, Carson has built a distinctive literary career that defies conventional boundaries. Trained in classics, she has extensively translated ancient Greek texts, treating translation not simply as an exercise in reproducing older works but as a foundation for developing new literary forms.
She has published nearly 20 books spanning poetry, essays, drama and translations.
Among her best-known works is Autobiography of Red, published in 1998, which transforms fragments of the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus’ Geryoneis into a contemporary verse novel. Carson reimagines Geryon, the red-winged monster of Greek mythology, as a teenager grappling with love, identity and heartbreak in the modern world.
The work was followed by Red Doc in 2013, which revisits its characters as adults while blending poetry, drama and narrative. The book follows Geryon, now known as “G”, alongside a war veteran and an artist, extending Carson’s exploration of mythology, memory, love and loss.
Her other notable works include Eros the Bittersweet, Men in the Off Hours, An Oresteia and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy.
Carson’s work has earned numerous major literary honours, including the Lannan Literary Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Fellowship.
The Nobel Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about $1.2 million.
With her selection, Carson becomes the 19th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since the award was established, according to reports following the announcement.
