Afreximbank Grows Gross Income to $2.7bn in Nine Months
By Aduragbemi Omiyale
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has released its financial statements for the first nine months of 2026, growing its gross income to $2.7 billion from $2.4 billion in the same period of 2025.
The 11 per cent jump in earnings in the period ended September 30, 2026, was supported by continued balance sheet growth and strong earnings generation, largely driven by a 9.1 per cent increase in interest income to $2.4 billion from $2.2 billion, underpinned by growth in average loan balances, which increased to $34.8 billion in 9M’2026 from $28.9 billion in 9M’2025, reflecting sustained demand for trade and project financing across the bank’s member countries, as net interest income also strengthened by 15 per cent to $1.5 billion.
The results showed that fees and commission income from unfunded business activities, including guarantees, letters of credit and advisory services, increased to $136.9 million from $117.2 million in the prior-year period.
In the period under review, net income rose 24 per cent to $813.5 million from $654.3 million due to growth in lending activities, improved interest income and disciplined cost management, despite a challenging global operating environment.
Its total assets and contingencies went up by 12 per cent to $54.1 billion from $48.5 billion as a result of an expansion of the lender’s lending portfolio, with net loans and advances increasing by 8 per cent to $36.2 billion from $33.5 billion.
Afreximbank’s Senior Executive Vice President, Mr Denys Denya, said the performance underscores the organisation’s ability to deliver strong and sustainable performance while continuing to fulfil its development mandate across Africa and the Caribbean.
“Our expanded lending portfolio, robust profitability and strong capital position demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy and the growing relevance of our interventions across our target markets.
“As global economic and geopolitical uncertainties persist, Afreximbank remains committed to providing the financing, trade facilitation and strategic investments needed to strengthen regional value chains, support industrialisation and accelerate the continent’s economic transformation,” he stated.
