Fire Guts Nigeria’s Oil Minister’s Abuja Residence

By Dipo Olowookere

On Sunday evening, an inferno razed a part of the residence of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Ibe Kachikwu.

Recently, the Minister wrote a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari, who doubles as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, complaining of how he (Mr Kachikwu), has allegedly been bypassed by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in the affairs of the agency he once headed as the GMD.

The letter was leaked to the media and has since led to sharp criticisms, causing embarrassment to the present administration, which claimed to have zero tolerance for corruption.

According to The Cable, an online news platform, which broke news of the inferno today, the fire started from the junior Minister’s bedroom.

It was suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault to the air conditioners.

Though details of the incident are still very sketchy, and it was not certain what items were lost to the inferno, which affected Mr Kachikwu’s house in Asokoro, Abuja.

But The Cable quoted a source in the known to have said, “Kachikwu was not at home when it (the incident) happened, but thankfully the fire service reacted quickly and put out the fire before things could go out of hand.”
