Pogba’s Brace in 98 Seconds Buoys United Comeback Win at Etihad

By Dipo Olowookere

Two goals scored in quick succession by Paul Pogba inspired a Manchester United win over their ‘noisy neighbours’ in the Saturday’s late kick off.

Manchester City were hoping to claim the English Premier League title today by beating their city rival, but the red side North-West of England had other plans.

They came from two down in the first half to spoil the title party for the Blue part of Manchester in the second half.

Captain Vincent Kompany put the Pep Guardiola-led team ahead with a stunning header from a corner, while İlkay Gündoğan put the second past David De Gea in the 18-yard box moment later.

Raheem Sterling had three other clear chances to put City ahead, but he put them wide as United continued to struggle in the first half.

However, after the break, Manchester United show more hunger and their efforts paid off when Paul Pogba put the ball at the back of the net to open up the game.

About 97 and half seconds after he scored his first goal, Pogba headed in his second from a cross provided by Alexis Sanchez, who had his best game today for United since joining them in January this year from Arsenal.

Former United captain, Chris Smalling, gave the Red Devils something to be happy about when he scored the third goal for his team, leaving Manchester City pushing for a comeback, which did not come.

The win over Man City has delayed the crowing of the Pep Guardiola’s men as champions of English football this season. They will have to wait another day with 13 points ahead of United with only six games left to play.

Jose Mourinho, coach of Manchester United, hailed his boys, especially Pogba, for the comeback win at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City.

He said the hunger to win gave the team the inspiration to beat City at their backyard. He dedicated the victory to fans of the club all over the world.
