Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has formally declared his intention to seek another term of four years in office, which he is entitled to according to the constitution.

Mr Buhari was elected as President in March 2015, defeating the then incumbent President, Mr Goodluck Jonathan.

He won the poll under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), removing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which governed the nation for 16 years.

President Buhari, after several calls from various quarters, announced his intention to seek re-election next year on Monday at a meeting of the ruling APC in Abuja.

He was at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party held today at the APC secretariat.

“President @MBuhari has just announced his intention to seek the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contest for a second term of office in the 2019 elections,” the Twitter handle of the presidency wrote on Monday.

The meeting was attended by the Vice President, Mr Yemi Osinbajo; the Senate President, Mr Bukola Saraki; and other senior party members.
