Cross River Shines At 2016 Cowbellpedia Math Competition

In a dramatic encounter involving ten states last weekend at the on-going preliminary of the 2016 Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz Show, Cross River State triumphed and picked two semi-final slots.

In the junior category, Master Godswill Harold of Deeper Life High School, Calabar was locked in battle against Shukura Kamardeen of Federal Government College, Daura, Katsina State; Ishaq Ibrahim of Caliphate International School, Gusau, Zamfara State; Tanitoluwa Adebayo of Supreme Foundation School, Sangisha, Lagos State; Chukwuemeka Nwobi of Federal Science and Technical College, Awka, Anambra State; and Amarachi Imo of Federal Government College, Owerri, Imo State.

Harold, who scored 95 percent in the qualifying written examination to emerge as a state representative, moved to the semi-final alongside Amarachi, who scored 99 per cent in the qualifying examination.

In the senior category, Miss Lauretha Essiet of Saint Annes High School, Calabar, Cross River State and Samuel Michael of Reality High School, Ilesha, Osun State triumphed over Favour Njoku of Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Calabar; Abdulhakam Obejara of Elly Demonstration Academy, Serti, Taraba State; Valentine Kama of Saint Augustine College, New Karu, Nasarawa State; and Fah’d Moshood of Basaura Institute of Comprehensive Education, Birni-Kebbi, Kebbi State.

Eshiet, the only female student in her preliminary group, scored 94 per cent in the qualifying written examination proceeded to the semi-final stage with Michael who had 97 per cent in the written examination.

Harold and Eshiet went emotional outside the studio as they embraced themselves in a show of state solidarity. The duo also promised to sustain the momentum and win the competition for their schools and their State.

“I am happy we both qualified, and I pray we also make it to the final and win the star prize in both the junior and senior categories. I am working and praying for this. That will be fantastic for our schools and the State,” Eshiet said.

The ultimate prize for this year’s edition is One million naira and an all-expenses paid educational excursion outside the country. The teacher of the winning students will receive four hundred thousand naira.

Promasidor has also promised that the first and the second runners-up will go home with N750, 000 and N500, 000 respectively. There will also be plaques, mathematics textbooks and a desktop computer for the winners.

The airing of the programme continues this weekend; AIT Network on Saturday, 7pm; NTA Onitsha, Sunday, 5pm; STV Jos, Sunday, 5pm; NTA Kano, Saturday, 2pm.; and DSTV Channel 154 on Saturday, 9pm.
