Reports just reaching us indicate that the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Mr Dino Melaye, has finally surrendered himself to the police.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force had laid siege to the Abuja home of the lawmaker for over a week in a bid to have him arrested for a criminal case.
However, the Senator had refused to come out of his residence despite the security officials cutting off water and electricity supply to his house in an effort to ‘smoke’ him out of his hiding.
After over seven days of keeping vigil on him, Mr Melaye finally came out of his hiding to surrender himself to the police on Friday afternoon.
It was gathered that the Senator left his house with the police accompanied by his lawyer, Mr Mike Ozekhome and some lawmakers.
Business Post reports that on Thursday, an Abuja High Court refused to grant Mr Melaye’s application to order the removal of police blockage on his residence.
The police claimed on July 19, 2018, the lawmaker and his thugs shot and injured a police officer, who was carrying out his constitutional duties.
“Senator Dino Melaye is wanted by the police for a case of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide, committed on 19th July, 2018, when Senator Dino Melaye and his armed thugs attacked police personnel; shot and wounded Sgt. Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) on stop and search duty along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi State,” spokesman of the police, Mr Jimoh Moshood, alleged. He said the police officer was yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and was under intensive medical care.
