Mr Gboyega Oyetola has been affirmed as the duly-elected Governor of Osun State. This confirmation was done on Friday by the Supreme Court in Abuja.
On September 22, 2018, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted governorship election in Osun State, which was later declared inconclusive by the electoral umpire. On September 27, it conducted a rerun, and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the eventual winner.
This prompted candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ademola Adeleke, to challenge the victory at the tribunal, which upturned INEC’s decision.
However, Mr Oyetola went to the Court of Appeal, where he got his victory back.
The matter was later taken to the Supreme Court by Mr Adeleke, which has now upheld the decision of the appellate court today.
At the ruling today, five of the seven members of the panel agreed substantially with the Court of Appeal which ruled that a majority judgement delivered at the tribunal was a nullity.
