Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has tested positive for the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).
His colleague in the Information and Strategy Ministry, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed this development on Monday morning in a statement.
It was explained in the statement that the health practitioner was aware of his COVID-19 status after he was contact-traced by officials handling the virus in the state.
Though he is showing no symptoms of the contagion, he has been isolated and would receive the home-based treatment as outlined by the state government.
“Subsequent to close contact with persons feeling unwell and testing positive for the COVID-19 infection, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has tested positive for the virus,” the statement from the Commissioner for Information and Strategy today said.
“Professor Abayomi became aware of his status following the required testing protocol of contact tracing procedures,” he added, stating that Mr Abayomi “is doing well with no symptoms.”
“Adhering to the protocol of the home-based strategy in Lagos State, the Commissioner will be isolating in his home for the next 14 days but will continue to discharge his duties both as the Deputy Incident Commander of the Incident Command System for COVID-19 and most especially, as the Commissioner for Health,” Mr Omotoso said.
Concluding, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy said, “Our prayers are with him and his family during his period of isolation.”
