The Nigerian subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) Limited, has declared a force majeure on Forcados exports.

A statement from the firm, according to Reuters, explained that the action was taken as a result of an obstruction of a tanker path by a malfunctioning barge.

The unfortunate incident left the company with no other option than to declare a force majeure on exports of Nigerian Forcados crude oil.

SPDC stated that efforts were ongoing to lift the force majeure to resume crude oil lifting from the terminal.

However, it stated that the action became effective from 12 noon on Monday, December 20, 2021.

Shell is one of the leading oil firms in the country and has been “active in Nigeria since 1937,” the company’s profile stated.

Shell companies and investments have played a pioneering role in onshore, shallow and deepwater oil exploration and production. It has also been at the forefront of gas development, producing and delivering gas to domestic consumers and export markets for over 40 years.

As one of the world’s leading energy companies, Shell plays a key role in helping to meet the world’s growing energy demand in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways.

Last month, the company announced a new business line in Nigeria to expand natural gas marketing and sales to meet the rapidly growing energy needs of wholesale customers and provide more and cleaner energy solutions in the country.

The new venture, Shell Energy Nigeria, according to a statement from the organisation, aims to deliver competitive and reliable energy for power generation and industrial users and to develop gas distribution to serve people in new regions.

The General Manager of Shell Energy Nigeria, Mr Markus Hector, had said, “In line with the federal government’s ‘decade of gas’ initiative, Shell Energy Nigeria will strive to deliver gas-based energy solutions to a broad range of businesses across the country to help drive economic development and deliver greater value from the country’s natural resources.”
