Some wine stores at Wuse Market in Abuja have been shut down by officials of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) because they were not only duly registered, but also counterfeits.
Leading the operation on Friday was the agency’s Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Mr Shaba Mohammed, who said NAFDAC has zero tolerance for counterfeits in Nigeria.
He said, “The operation is in continuation of a renewed global anti-counterfeiting fight against counterfeit, substandard, fake and unwholesome food and beverages in collaboration with Interpol and Europol.”
Mr Mohammed further said that, “This operation is being carried out in 60 countries of the world which include Africa, America, Asia and the Middle East.”
He warned that unwholesome food and beverages pose threat to human lives and warned Nigerians to stay away from them.
The shops locked by the agency had wines worth about N100 million and some of them found at the stores included Chamdor, Toma, Valdepenas, J and W, and Charmat, among others.
