The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the 2019 general elections.
Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement in the early hours of Saturday that the polls have been shifted by one week.
This followed an intensive meeting Mr Yakubu held with the 12 national electoral commissioners on Friday in Abuja.
The INEC chief said the decision to postpone the polls was reached to allow the commission conduct a credible exercise.
According to him, logistics issues experienced by the electoral body forced the shifting of the elections.
The presidential and National Assembly elections were scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2019, but INEC said these polls would now take place on Saturday, February 23, 2019.
Also, the governorship and state houses of assembly polls earlier fixed for Saturday, March 2, 2019 have now been shifted to Saturday, March 9, 2019.
Mr Yakubu said another meeting would be held today by 2pm to discuss further matters.
