door-to-door ministry

Members of the religious faith, Jehovah’s Witnesses, are excited over the resumption of their signature door-to-door ministry after a few years of hiatus.

The well-known door-to-door ministry was earlier suspended by authorities of the church due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought the globe to its knees in 2020.

In a statement issued by the Nigeria Branch Office of Jehovah’s Witnesses, it was stated that the street preaching of the gospel resumed on Thursday, September 1, 2022, across the globe.

It was further disclosed that a special global campaign was launched to offer members of the public a free interactive Bible course.

“We can’t wait to bring our Bible-based message of hope to our neighbours once again,” says Olusegun Eroyemi, Nigeria spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “As global crises escalate on all fronts it is a huge privilege to bring real smiles on the faces of our friends in person.”

Witnesses conducted an average of five million Bible courses around the globe during each month of last year. The program offers a practical way to learn what the Bible teaches on a variety of subjects, such as how to find happiness, why there is so much evil and suffering in the world, and what the Bible promises for the future.

Participating in the interactive Bible course with Jehovah’s Witnesses comes without any obligation. The Witnesses simply present what the Bible teaches and allow each person to determine their own personal beliefs and life choices.

The main textbook for the study is the Bible itself. Each lesson is designed to be covered in one hour.

Smart Schools: EFCC Recovers N1.2bn from Sujimoto for Enugu

N1.2bn from Sujimoto for Enugu

By Modupe Gbadeyanka

About N1.2 billion has been recovered from a prominent real estate company, Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and handed over to the Enugu State government.

Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited is owned by Mr Olasijibomi Ogundele.

The EFCC handed over the money to the state government on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, after recovery from the company in line with its unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes and the recovery of public funds misappropriated or unutilized by fraudulent actors.

Sujimoto was contracted by the Enugu State government for the construction of 22 smart schools in the state.

On February 11, 2025, the EFCC received a petition against Sujimoto, stating that the sum of N2.289 billion was paid to Mr Ogundele as an advance fee for the construction of the 22 smart schools in the State.

“As the completion date stated in the contract awards lapsed on January 2, 2025, the persistent non-performance of the contractor as shown by the documents, is clear evidence of intention to defraud the state government.

“We identify Ogundele as the Group Managing Director of the company and jointly liable for the refund of the state funds, following an irremediable breach of the terms of the contract and diversion of the project funds towards personal or other uses unconnected to the contract,” the petitioner said.

Reacting to the petition, operatives of the Special Task Fraud Section attached to the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the commission, swung into action and the sum of N1, 234,350,000 was recovered for the state government.

Representing the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ola Olukoyede, during the handing over, the Zonal Director, Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Commission, Commander of the EFCC, Mr Daniel Isei, reiterated the commission’s commitment to recovering public funds.

“Where there are instances of economic and financial crimes against an individual or an agency of government, against government itself, the EFCC will ensure that every act that is contrary to law is dealt with, and where possible, restitution is made to the victim. It is on this basis that we received your petition as a state government that there was a case that needed EFCC to do as mandated  by law. We are glad to announce to you that in doing our job, we have been able to recover some of those monies that were given to Sujimoto Construction,” he said.

While warning contractors, especially those entrusted with public funds to be mindful of the Procurement Act and be guided by integrity while handling public funds, Mr Olukoyede said that the commission will look at every facet of the petition against Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited and ensure that every kobo of Enugu State government that is not accounted for, is traced, tracked, and recovered.

“Where cases of criminality are established, the EFCC will take further steps of prosecution. That must be clearly understood. For us, we will continue to expect that people align their activities to processes and procedures. People must work clearly in line with extant laws, particularly the Procurement Act. Also, it is very important that where due diligence is applied in all cases, prevention will come into play.

“I advise that we continue to entrench professionalism in all that we do and on the part of other Nigerians that will be doing contracts for local governments, state or the federal governments to ensure that they are always guided by integrity, accountability and transparency in all they do. Every public fund that is given out must be adequately utilized or accounted for, else, the EFCC will move in and ensure that issues of economic and financial crimes are speedily dealt with”, he said.

Receiving the draft on behalf of the Enugu State Government, Mr Onyia lauded the commission for its professionalism and dedication exhibited while recovering the money.  He noted that when the state submitted the petition, there were lots of distractions in the public space but the EFCC maintained its professional posture, followed the money and thorough investigations were done.

“EFCC, we thank you for being very focused on helping us recover this fund. This, for us, is a remarkable testimony of intergovernmental collaboration and transparency,” he said.

Court Verdict on Labour Party Leadership Excites CNPP

Published

Nenadi Usman Labour Party

By Modupe Gbadeyanka

The judgement of Justice Peter Odo Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, affirming Ms Esther Nenadi Usman as the authentic chairman of the Labour Party, has been applauded by the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP).

The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, comes after the Supreme Court had earlier ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Ms Usman as the leader of the opposition party, and not Mr Julius Abure.

In a statement today, CNPP described the lower court judgment as “a clear victory for constitutionalism, internal party democracy, and the supremacy of the rule of law.”

According to the group, the judgment, which it noted was “firmly anchored on the binding decision of the Supreme Court,” sends “an unmistakable signal that no individual ambition, factional interest, or political manipulation can lawfully override the authority of party constitutions and established democratic procedures.”

“The CNPP warmly welcomes and commends the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which affirmed Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the valid National Chairman of the Labour Party and ordered INEC to recognise the Nenadi Usman–led Caretaker Committee as the legitimate authority of the party pending the conduct of a national convention,” the statement, signed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the association, Mr James Ezema, stated.

The group further praised the judiciary for what it described as courage and integrity in handling the matter, stressing that the ruling stands out in a challenging political climate.

“The CNPP particularly salutes the courage, clarity, and integrity displayed by the judiciary in this matter,” the statement read. “In a political environment where undue influence, intimidation, and coercion are often deployed to bend institutions to partisan interests, this judgment stands out as a reassuring testament to judicial independence.”

The CNPP warned that Nigeria’s democracy would remain endangered if the judiciary failed to act boldly in the face of pressure. “Unless the judiciary continues to act with boldness and fearlessness—resisting political pressure and vested interests—Nigeria’s democracy will regrettably continue to suffer stagnation and retardation,” it stated.

Addressing the broader implications of the ruling, the organisation stressed that democracy cannot thrive where court orders are ignored or selectively obeyed.

“Democracy cannot deepen where court orders are treated with contempt or subjected to selective obedience,” the statement said, adding that it also “cannot flourish where party constitutions are trivialised and internal democracy sacrificed on the altar of personal control and selfish ambition.”

It said the Labour Party leadership crisis, now resolved by the courts, should serve as a warning to all political actors.

“The leadership crisis in the Labour Party, now decisively addressed by the courts, must serve as a lesson to all political parties and actors that impunity is incompatible with democratic governance,” it declared.

The CNPP also issued a broader call to political parties and leaders across the country to recommit to democratic principles. “The CNPP therefore calls on all political parties and political leaders in Nigeria to shun selfish interests and recommit themselves to politics guided strictly by rules, principles, and respect for party constitutions,” the statement said.

It emphasised that political parties must respect internal structures and collective decisions. “Political parties must uphold their internal organs, respect collective decisions, and recognise that the supremacy of the party is superior to the ambitions of any individual or group,” the CNPP noted, stressing that “only in this way can parties earn public trust and contribute meaningfully to democratic consolidation.”

Turning to implementation of the judgment, the CNPP urged the electoral body and other authorities to act without delay. “We also urge INEC and all relevant authorities to give full, immediate, and unambiguous effect to the judgment of the court,” it said, warning that “the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral and democratic system depends not only on sound judicial pronouncements but also on their faithful and timely implementation.”

It congratulated Ms Usman and members of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, while urging restraint and inclusiveness in the discharge of their duties.

“The CNPP congratulates Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and members of the Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party and urges them to discharge their mandate with restraint, inclusiveness, and strict adherence to the party constitution, as they work towards a credible, transparent, and unifying national convention,” the statement added.

Concluding, the CNPP reaffirmed its belief that strong institutions and principled leadership are essential to national progress. “Nigeria’s democracy can only be strengthened through strong institutions, respect for the rule of law, and principled political leadership,” it said, describing the court judgment as “a step in the right direction” that “must be defended by all democrats.”
