Properties worth millions of Naira were lost when inferno brought down the popular Kano Cooperative Fish Market in Kano metropolis.
A statement issued by the Director General of Media and Communications at Government House in Kano, Mr Salihu Tanko Yakasai, disclosed that the unfortunate incident occurred at about 8:30pm on Saturday, January 20, 2018 and lasted for some hours.
A total of 27 containers of fish were burnt before men of the state Fire Service brought the situation under control.
Although the cause of the fire could not be immediately established, traders in the market were seen tidying up the debris, when the state governor, Mr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, visited the scene of the incident on Sunday morning.
Addressing victims of the disaster, Mr Ganduje said it was sorrowful that goods, cash and other valuables were destroyed.
“It is very sad that you have lost cash and property at a time when the economic situation in the country is not very favourable.
“Please take it as predestined and I pray that Allah will prevent recurrence,” the Governor appealed to victims of the incident.
He assured that his administration would do its best to alleviate their condition, explaining that mechanism would be put in place to quantify the loss and the number of traders affected.
The Governor cautioned people in the state to be cautious while handling ignitable substances particularly during the prevailing harmattan season.
