Counterfeit products valued at N68.126 million have been seized by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) at the Akanu-Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.
The consignment carrying the alleged fake products contains unlabelled chemicals, drugs labelled in Chinese language, sex enhancing drugs, labels of popular products like Chelsea Dry Gin, among others.
One Mr Ugochukwu Ugwuegbulu was reportedly arrested for importing alleged fake drug known as Gyno Aaktarh Vaginal capsules (200mg) from Dubai.
Commenting on the confiscated fake products, NAFDAC’s Deputy Director, Mr John Okwori, said the fake Chelsea Dry Gin labels seized can package the counterfeit beverages worth N64.7 million.
He said other consignments imported without approval from NAFDAC and which the agency seized were abandoned by their owners.
Mr Okwori said his unit had strict directives from Acting Director-General of NAFDAC to ensure that Akanu-Ibiam International Airport was not used as smuggling channel for drugs and fake products, as such they are adopting relative proactive measures.
