An investigation has been ordered into implementation of the $1 billion Ogoni land clean-up exercise launched in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senate, at its plenary on Tuesday, directed its Committee on Environment to uncover why the clean-up has not commenced as promised.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, in a motion today, expressed shock that since the launch of the exercise last year, nothing had been done in Ogoni land, Rivers State, as regards the clean-up, which was launched amid fanfare.
She said if the exercise was taken seriously, there would have been a significant change in the area.
While supporting the motion, Mr Magnus Abe, who hails from Rivers State, lamented that there was nothing to show that the clean-up was designed to actually tidy the area.
According to him, farmlands were still polluted while rivers of oil spills were still visible in the community.
Yesterday, the world marked Environmental Day and Nigeria joined in the celebrations.
