ICE Africa Awakens Multi-Billion Dollar Betting Industry on African Soil

Pietro Calicchio, leader of the Hospitality and Gambling Industry for PricewaterhouseCoopers in South Africa, has identified the gaming industry as being one of the key contributors to improving the economic growth across Africa.
Talking ahead of this year’s ICE Africa, which will bring the global gaming industry and the whole African Gaming Continent together when it opens between 24 and 25 October at the Sandton Convention Centre, South Africa, Calicchio said: “The gambling industry in South Africa will continue to be adversely affected in the near term by slower economic growth, but improving economic conditions over the latter part of the forecast period will aid growth. The industry remains an important contributor to the economy through the creation of jobs, continued capital expansion and the payment of taxes to both provincial and national government.”
With approximately 30 countries in Africa containing either brick-and-mortar casinos or various types of gambling machines, the continent’s most popular gambling destination, South Africa, includes 40 casinos and an estimated 38,000 slot machines. Ever since its legalisation on South African soil in 1994, gambling has grown into a multi-billion Rand industry in the country and, almost two decades in, the industry is worth more than R23 billion and contributes R26.9 billion into the country’s economy. According to PricewaterhouseCooper’s Gambling outlook report, the industry is expected to grow at a rate of more than 5% to reach nearly R35 billion ($2.5 billion) by 2021.
The economic growth predicted in the report isn’t confined to South Africa, as significant amounts of gambling occur in Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Uganda, all of which will be key focuses on the ICE Africa agenda. Gross Gambling revenues of Africa’s biggest economy, Nigeria, are expected to grow by 16% over the next five years and a country- wide lottery called Quick Lotto is to be rolled out in the future. The Former chairman of the senate committee on Capital Market, Ayo Arise, believes that the launch of a national lottery service would generate additional tax revenues and create jobs. According to Arise, around 20% of the profits generated from the national lottery are to be directed to the Federal government, which is set to use the money for good causes.
As Africa’s gambling industry continues to grow from a revenue perspective and the noose on regulations become tighter, there is a need for the industry to reinvent itself and to align with worldwide trends to ensure sustainability for operators and the countries alike. Union Bank’s Edu360 Sustains Support for Greensprings Football Academy

Union Bank of Nigeria has again demonstrated its commitment to youth development and quality education with the sponsorship of the 11th Greensprings Football Academy held between April 13 and 17, 2025, at the school’s campus in Lagos.
The five-day training camp provided an opportunity for children aged 5 to 17 to receive expert coaching from top international coaches affiliated with the West Bromwich Albion Football Club, Dutch Football Association and the English Football League (EFL), alongside support from coaches from the Lagos State Football Association and Nigerian football legend, Mr Victor Ikpeba, fondly called The Prince of Monaco.
The bank threw its weight behind the academy through its Edu360 initiative designed to fuel future stars in the country and foster youth development and quality education through initiatives like the GreenSprings Football Academy.
The Greensprings Football Academy has a proven record of producing professional players, with some graduates playing for the Under-17 National Team of Nigeria.
This year, the top students, Alabi Aliami and Ayodeji Boluwatife, were awarded additional virtual training sessions with the coaches, amongst other benefits.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, which witnessed notable guests from the football community, including Lagos State FA Chairman, Mr Laimeed Gafar, with Samuel Jake Whitmore, Jordan Hall and Owen Jones, West Bromwich Albion coaches, the Lead External Communications for Union Bank, Bukola Ayeni, said, “Union Bank is a sponsor in the Greenspring Football Academy under our Edu360 initiative, which aligns with one of our core values of being community focused.
