By Modupe Gbadeyanka A 36-seater ferry boat has been commissioned by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Yelwa–Yauri, Kebbi State. It was gathered that the means of transportation was procured by Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah as part of his constituency project. At the commissioning of the boat, the Managing Director of NIWA, Mr George Moghalu, expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for the support, saying he has shown a commitment and desire to create the enabling environment for water transportation to grow. Mr Moghalu used the occasion to highlight the importance of water transportation, especially for transporting humans and cargos, noting that it helps to strengthen the economy through tourism. However, he appealed to the government of Kebbi State to encourage NIWA by assisting it to ensure that companies and the public using NIWA’s right of way, which is one hundred metres perpendicular from the point of river, pay their legitimate fees. In his remarks, Mr Na’Allah promised to bring more developments to his people as the ferry being commissioned was just the beginning, announcing that two more ferries were on their way coming from Lagos and China. He also said, in addition to the jetties he has built before in the area, he was also planning in conjunction with NIWA to build a ferry terminal.
