By Adedapo Adesanya The Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria (ARIAN) has lent its voice to the ongoing protests and calls for police reforms in the country. A statement by the National President of the association, Mr Kunle Odewunmi, noted that the association believes that this is a genuine and valid cause that must be supported with all its strength. “The welfare of Police Officers must be prioritized because of the vital roles they play in securing the lives and properties of Nigerians. For this reason, they must have life insurance benefits so that when eventualities happen their children will not become destitute and their families will not suffer,” he said. Protests kickstarted more than a week ago calling for the end of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the police over human right abuses and unlawful acts. Nigerians had launched protests which have rendered activities and disrupted traffic on major roads in many cities. The campaign trended across the world after celebrities and many influential figures learned their voices against harassment and incessant killing of citizens by SARS. The protests are holding in more than 15 states of the federation and in other parts of the world in which Nigerians are located, calling for an investigation into police oppression and brutality. Lagos, Kaduna, Delta and Ekiti states have established Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Police Brutality and Extrajudicial Killings who are charged with looking into all complaints and cases and make sure officers found guilty face the law and get justice to those affected.
