By Adedapo Adesanya The Lagos State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state as the peaceful #EndSARS protests turned violent after it was hijacked by some thugs. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a press release on Tuesday noted that the “peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society,” and it was necessary to impose a restriction of movement from 4 pm today. “Dear Lagosians, I have watched with shock how what began as a peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society. Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state. “As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #ENDSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state. “I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4 pm today, 20th October 2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders, must be found on the streets,” he declared. In Lagos, the protests went south after hoodlums burnt down a police station in the Orile Iganmu area of the state. The police station services both Iganmu community in Apapa Iganmu and Orile Community in Coker/Aguda. On Monday, some thugs attacked officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Yaba, leaving many of them injured. Also, yesterday, though in Benin City, the Edo State capital, some thugs attacked a police station by setting it on fire. They later went to two prisons in the state to free inmates. The actions of the hoodlums, who carried out the attacks under the guise of #EndSARS protest, made the Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, to declare a 24-hour curfew in the state.
