The United Kingdom is currently in a mourning mood as Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral (in Scotland) this afternoon,” a statement from the Royal Family on Thursday announced.
“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the short disclosure added.
Queen Elizabeth, who was born in 1926 as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, ascended the throne at the age of 25 in 1952 and was the longest of any British monarch in history.
During her reign as Queen, 15 Prime Ministers governed the United Kingdom, with the last being Ms Liz Truss, who was appointed this week.
