Former President of the United States, Mr Donald Trump, has been discharged from the hospital after he escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign in Pennsylvania.
The US Presidential election took a dramatic turn on Saturday as the Republican candidate was shot at the rally. The bullet pierced his right ear and was quickly taken away by Secret Service agents.
Videos seen by Business Post showed the former president grabbing the right side of his head with blood oozing from the bullet wound. He then got up and raised a fist to cheers from the crowd.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter. The suspected perpetrator has since been neutralised by the Secret Service.
One attendee was killed and two others were critically injured.
In a social media post, Mr Trump said he was “fine” after he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, and shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
He also extended condolences to other victims of the shooting.
I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of [those] badly injured,” he wrote on Truth Social.
His opponent at the November 5 polls and US President, Mr Joe Biden spoke to Mr Trump after the shooting, and said he was grateful to hear Mr Trump was “safe and doing well”.
“The Trump rally … should have been able to be conducted peacefully,” Mr Biden said. “It’s just not appropriate.”
Several world leaders, including President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, have condemned the attack on the former President, who is attempting to return to the White House to complete his second term of four years after being booted out by President Joe Biden in 2021.
