Cultist in Ogun

By Bliss Okperan

A 23-year-old cultist has been arrested by the police in Ogun State after an alarm was raised by a resident of Abioro Community in the Sango Ota area of the state.

A statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Ms Omolola Odutola, said the suspect has been terrorising the inhabitants of the area.

She said the accused person, identified as Mr Afolabi Taiwo, confessed to being a member of the Eiye cult group, adding that efforts are being made to arrest other cult members.

“During his subsequent interrogation, Afolabi confessed to being a member of the outlawed Eiye Confraternity Cult Group. He confessed that he was initiated into the cult in 2020 in Ajah, Lagos State,” the report said.

She averred that, “The arrest of Afolabi Taiwo was just one step in the ongoing fight against crime. The end of cultists who refused to desist will meet stiff consequences as the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu, will continue to hunt criminals down by dismantling their criminal activities, especially as the yuletide draws closer.”

Explaining how the arrest was made, the policewoman said on November 1, 2023, the suspect “jumped into the compound of the complainant on Abioro Street.

“Fortunately, the swift action of the complainant, who raised an alarm, drew the attention of neighbours, leading to Afolabi’s arrest at the scene.”

Ms Odutola commended the efforts made by both parties to bring the accused person to justice, reminding criminals that their actions will not go unpunished and that law and order would be achieved through the authorities.

“It is commendable that the joint operation between the police and the So Safe Corps resulted in the arrest of Afolabi and foiled his attempt to commit a felony.

“The collaboration between these security agencies is essential in creating a safe and secure environment for the community.

“This success should serve as a reminder to criminals that their actions will not go unpunished and that the authorities are actively working to maintain law and order,” she said in the statement.
