A former manager of the England men’s football team, Mr Sven-Goran Eriksson, has died at the age of 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The Swede, who coached the Three Lions for five years between 2001 and 2006, passed away on Monday morning, according to a statement from his children.
At the beginning of this year, the veteran football coach informed the footballing community that at best, he only had a year to live.
He was later granted his lifelong wish of coaching Liverpool after announcing his cancer diagnosis in a charity match between Liverpool Legends and Ajax at Anfield in March, with the Reds winning 4-2.
In February 2023, Mr Eriksson stepped down as the Sporting Director of a Swedish football club, Karlstad, due to his health issues.
After he left his role as England head coach at the end of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Mr Eriksson managed Mexico and the Ivory Coast.
At the club level, he coached Manchester City, Leicester City, Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio.
“Our father Sven-Goran Eriksson fell asleep peacefully in his home at Bjorkefors outside Sunne this morning. He has for a long time fought bravely with his illness, but now it has come to an end,” a part of the statement issued by his children, Lina and Johan Eriksson, stated.
